To drop a fruit in Grow a Garden 2, open your backpack and equip the fruit so it is in your hand. On PC, press Backspace. On mobile, tap the on-screen drop button that appears while you hold the item. The fruit lands on the ground in front of you, and any player nearby can pick it up.
Drop controls by platform
Dropping came in a 2026 update. Tutorials posted between 17 and 29 June 2026 call it a new feature, and every guide checked for this page (up to the wiki edit of 16 October 2026) still describes the same controls.

PC
- Open the backpack and select the fruit you want to get rid of.
- Make sure it is actually in your character’s hand.
- Press Backspace. The fruit drops right away.
The same key drops pets and gears too. The Grow a Garden 2 wiki also lists seeds, and a separate tutorial agrees. The wiki adds Seed Packs and Crates, but no second source confirms those yet.
Mobile
Hold the fruit, pet or gear first. A drop button only appears while an item is held. Tutorials describe it differently (“Drop”, a bag icon, a backpack icon), and one shows it on the right side of the screen. Tap it and the item is placed on the ground.
Console
None of the sources we checked show a controller button for dropping. If you play on Xbox or PlayStation, don’t count on a specific button until the game or the wiki documents one.
Picking a dropped fruit back up
On mobile, tap the item on the ground (or its pick-up prompt) to put it back in your backpack. One PC tutorial picks items up with E. No second source confirms that key yet, but it’s the one to try first.
Note: It isn’t only you who can pick it up. The wiki and a tutorial both say other players can grab anything you drop. Never drop a valuable fruit near people you don’t trust.
Why can’t I drop my fruit?
It’s in your backpack, not your hand
This is the most common cause. Backspace and the mobile button only act on the item you are currently holding. Select the fruit again so it shows in your hand, then try once more.
The fruit is favorited
One tutorial unfavorites the fruit before dropping it, and Nerd’s Chalk lists favoriting as a likely reason the button doesn’t work. It hasn’t been confirmed in-game, but if the drop control does nothing, remove the favorite star and try again.
You expected Sheckles
Dropping doesn’t sell anything. The fruit just goes on the ground. To get paid you still have to sell it at the Sell Stand.
Dropping fruit at night and stealing
The official game description warns that stealing starts at night. According to the wiki, your garden can be raided while you are away from it. No source says whether dropped items get any protection at night. Since anyone can pick up a dropped fruit, it is effectively unprotected. Hand fruit over during the day, or stand in your own garden.
Do dropped fruits despawn?
Unknown. No source documents a despawn timer for dropped items. Treat a drop as temporary and pick valuable items back up quickly.
How to give a fruit to a friend
The confirmed way is to stand next to your friend, drop the fruit, and let them pick it up. Do this away from other players. One tutorial shows fruit being dropped outside the owner’s garden, almost anywhere on the map. Only that one source shows it, though. The wiki also describes a mailbox for sending items, but its list of mailable items (seeds, gears, pets, props) doesn’t include crops. So for fruit, dropping is the dependable option.
What about the original Grow a Garden?
The original Grow a Garden has no documented drop key. Instead, it has gifting: hold the fruit or pet, walk up to the other player, use the gift prompt, and wait for them to accept. The original game’s wiki lists the prompt as hold E on PC, the gift option on mobile, Square on PlayStation and X on Xbox. Those buttons come from the wiki alone. Video guides for the original game date from May 2025, so check that they still apply.
